Tap water and your health

Tap water and your health

Tap water and your healthUp to 60% of our bodies are made of water. H2O is responsible for many biological processes in our bodies and nothing would live and thrive without it on this planet. It contains vitamins and minerals essential for our wellbeing, but can also carry toxins and heavy metals that can harm us. SO just what are the concerns with tap water and your health?

What’s in tap water?

Chlorine and fluoride found in tap water have a good purpose for being in the water, as they kill bacteria. However these chemicals are neurotoxins, and recent studies showed that they can affect intelligence levels in small children. Imagine what they could do in our bodies when being present for 60-70 years!

Heavy metals are known to lower intelligence and intuition, they damage our liver and kidneys and are linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia as one of the main causes. Another issue with tap water is the extensive amount of calcium carbonate, which can be seen as limescale in your kettle. Calcium carbonate isn’t particularly water soluble, which is why our bodies are unable to eliminate it, and it is stored inside the body. This type of calcium causes tissues, veins and arteries to harden, becoming less flexible. Combined with the bad type of cholesterol and plaque, this clogs and narrows the veins and arteries, which can cause cardiovascular disease.

Our body can only break down a certain amount of this harmful type of calcium, and it gets stored in organs and joints and can cause arthritis. Another thing that can be found in the water are female hormones which come from contraceptives. Over time, they can throw off the hormonal balance in both men and women. Most of us don’t know what really is in tap water as the water companies don’t advertise their filtration results. Surely they are doing what they can, but is it good enough for your family’s health?

Water filters

Tap water can have a great effect on your health
Here I would personally recommend a 5 stage reverse osmosis filtration system which clears out 99.9% of unwanted chemical compounds. (I have no ties to this company. You could find other similar filters – just be sure to choose a good reverse osmosis filter.)

Such systems are very effective and can be installed under your sink.

They also clear out all the minerals from the water. You can get an extra sea or pink Himalayan salt module which will again enrich the water with minerals. Or you can just get a mineral-rich supplement such as chlorella or other superfood, which will help you to get minerals and vitamins into your body.

And it’s not just about the tap water. Most people don’t know that our body can absorb up to one glass of water while showering. So even when you filter your drinking water, a shower or bath filter would be good idea to protect yourself from toxin absorption (http://www.vyair.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=215).

Of course, this brings up another question about heavily chlorified public swimming pools. Where possible, try to choose ones that perhaps use different techniques to treat their water or have sea water there.

Best wishes and health,
Ondrej

On the vegan lifestyle

Vegans eat lots of fruit and vegetables

Veganism is a popular choice these days
Veganism is becoming more popular

Loads of people these days are becoming vegan; it’s as it became something of a new fashion. Whatever your reasons are, whether they’re honourably ethical, or simply to improve your health, you need to know about the gaps in the vegan lifestyle. And this is the case whether you are a raw or “cooking” vegan.

I would mention here that not supporting big companies that treat animals in the worst possible ways to maximise their profits is a great choice. You might be thinking that you are only one person and as an individual you cannot change much. But as one person, in your entire life you might meet thousands of people who you can inspire and educate about the choices they make in terms of buying their food. They might not necessarily become vegans but you might be able to affect in a good way what choices their children will make to better the environment we live in. So simply said – yes your help and knowledge matters.

There is a good documentary you can watch called Food Inc. which shows you some rather disturbing images of how things really are in the food industry.
Food-inc
For “cooking” vegans: your most important aims are making sure that you keep enough enzymes, vitamins, minerals and proteins in your diet. Funnily enough, loads of cooking vegans become rather chubby. The reason is that they have to eat larger quantities of food, as cooking it loses some of the nutritional value. Most of what they eat is also carbohydrates – so no wonder their bodies transform that into a fat.

So for you guys, include more raw green leafy vegetables, green juices, sprouts and superfoods, as well as plant-based proteins. Drink more water and exercise regularly.

Veganism – not just about your 5-a-Day

Raw vegans struggle with protein intake, but also minerals and vitamins, including B12. You can eat tonnes of protein, but if your body cannot digest it, there is no benefit to it. Some of the best proteins in my opinion are hemp, pea, and sprouted brown rice. You can mix these into your smoothies and juices.
Men would generally need more than women because of their body composition.

The reason why I promote superfoods is that vegetables in the markets, unless they are freshly picked and organic, grown in mineral-rich soils, haven’t got enough nutrients to give our body all it needs. So here again I would recommend to look into cacao, maca and other superfoods as needed.

As a vegan you are aware of what you put into your body. So what you apply on your skin, what water you drink and overall cosmetics should be important for you too. Shower filters and home water filters should in my opinion be a part of every vegan and non-vegan home. Most of us aren’t really aware of how much chemicals and toxins we take in, especially if you live in a big city. These chemicals can affect your health and well being including hormonal imbalances.
Always check ingredients in what ever beauty products you use. Shampoo, shower gel, soaps, make up, creams, tooth paste, sun screen protection etc… Most commonly, laurel sulphate has been linked to a possible cause of cancer and can be found in many brands.

Soy products are very popular, but aren’t really advisable especially if eaten too often. And do what you can to avoid genetically modified soy. Even if you only eat non-GM soy it is still oestrogen dominant and can affect hormonal balance in both women and men.

It is important as in everything to find the correct balance that will suit you and your lifestyle.
Best wishes,
Ondrej

Nutrition in daily life: top three tips to stay safe

Label with chemical additives

Ondrej Matej, founder of OMNI Superfood
By Ondrej Matej, founder of OMNI Superfood
In this day and age when most of us rely on information we find on the Internet it is hard to know how to get the correct nutrition for our body.
Do you make this mistake? Being hurried, you don’t spend the time to get information and without objectively thinking about it, just go for what it seems that others are doing? Many people have this problem. They think if it’s good for others, it will be good for me too.

This is a basic mistake, because unless you try it and it suits your lifestyle and brings you benefit and long term health improvement, you might end up trusting and following individuals or groups of people who might have been paid by the company to advertise their products and in reality would never come even close to taking them.

Therefore I always advise my clients to check the ingredients on what you are buying. Most probably if the product contains anything other than 100% natural ingredients it will likely not be good for you. If you find names of compounds which you can not even pronounce, then think twice about buying it!

Label with chemical additives
Do you know what these things are? Me neither!

If you’re one of those people who remember lists, then just for you here’s my top 3 tips:

1. Always check the ingredients in anything you buy

Yes it will be time consuming, but it’s better to find out sooner rather than later that some of your favourite products aren’t as good for you as you thought or are very bad for you and should be replaced. You’re creating habits which will benefit you in the long term and not only you but all the people you care about.

2. Try things first before you start taking them long-term

After deciding if the product ingredients are in line with the lifestyle that you are creating, with most natural products you should experience at
least some kind of result. Once you do, see if you like the result to continue with it.

3. The change has to happen on all levels

Slowly work towards tweaking your nutrition, implement exercise into your lifestyle and work on how you deal with stress in your life. Nutrition is the number one step allowing you to have more energy, better health and to have more mental clarity.

I sincerely hope that this post will benefit you in the best possible way.
Please stay tuned for more and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Best wishes,
